Basic Information
Yosemite National Park includes almost 1,200 square miles of scenic wild lands that were set aside in 1890 to preserve a portion of the central Sierra Nevada stretching along California. The park ranges from 2,000 feet above sea level to more than 13,000 feet and has several major attractions:

  • Alpine wilderness
  • Three groves of Giant Sequoias
  • Glacially carved Yosemite Valley
  • Impressive waterfalls, cliffs and unusual rock formations

No Reservations are needed to enter Yosemite National Park

  • Food service and groceries are available in the park.
  • Wilderness permits are required for any overnight travel into the park's back country.
  • Pets must be kept on a leash, and they are not allowed on trails, beaches, in the backcountry, or in public buildings.
  • Regularly scheduled ranger-led walks, talks, evening programs, concessionaire-operated bus tours, guided horseback rides and bicycle rentals are available.
  • There are four visitor centers in Yosemite National Park, offering books, maps, snacks and souvenirs.
  • To prevent congestion and overcrowding, automobile access may be temporarily restricted in Yosemite on spring weekends and busy holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.
  • Appropriate dress includes layers that can be added or removed as the temperature dictates. Always include rain gear.
